How to Use the UPSC CSE Age Eligibility Calculator
- Enter your date of birth.
- Confirm or edit the cutoff date — UPSC reckons age "as on 1 August" of the examination year, so this is pre-filled for the 2026 cycle.
- Select your category — General/EWS, OBC-NCL, SC/ST, or one of the two PwBD bands.
- Click Check eligibility to see your exact age and whether you fall inside the required band, along with how many attempts your category is allowed.
Everything runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
The UPSC CSE Age Band, Explained
For the General and EWS categories, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and must not have turned 32 as on the cutoff date (1 August of the exam year). That "must not have turned 32" phrasing matters: someone who turns exactly 32 on the cutoff date has already crossed the limit and is not eligible — the oldest eligible General candidate is one day short of their 32nd birthday. This calculator implements that exact boundary rather than a rough "32 or younger" approximation.
Category-wise Relaxation and Attempts
| Category | Upper age limit | Attempts |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 32 years | 6 |
| OBC-NCL | 35 years (+3) | 9 |
| SC / ST | 37 years (+5) | Unlimited, until the age limit |
| PwBD (General/EWS/OBC-NCL) | 42 years (+10) | 9 |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 47 years (+15) | Unlimited, until the age limit |
The lower age limit (21 years) does not shift for any category — only the upper limit is relaxed. "Attempts" here counts every CSE Preliminary Examination in which you appeared for at least one paper, regardless of whether you cleared it; a Preliminary exam you registered for but skipped entirely does not count.
What Disqualifies You
- Being younger than 21 on the cutoff date — no relaxation applies to the lower bound for any category.
- Having already crossed your category's upper age limit as on the cutoff date, even by a single day.
- Exceeding your category's attempt limit before you meet the minimum educational qualification and other eligibility conditions (attempts and age are checked separately, and both must pass).
- Applying under a category (e.g. OBC-NCL) whose non-creamy-layer certificate has expired or doesn't match the format prescribed in the notification — this calculator only checks age, not documentation.
Why the Cutoff Date Matters
UPSC does not use your age on the exam date, or on the date you apply — it uses your age as on a single fixed reference date stated in that year's notification (1 August of the exam year for CSE). A candidate who turns 21 the week after the exam but before 1 August is still ineligible; a candidate who turns 21 in July, before the cutoff, is fine. Always re-read the exact cutoff date printed in the notification for the year you're applying — this calculator's default is pre-filled for the 2026 cycle and is editable if you're checking a different year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the relaxation apply to the minimum age too? No. Only the upper age limit is relaxed for reserved categories; every candidate must be at least 21 regardless of category.
Can EWS candidates get any extra attempts or age relaxation? No — EWS is treated the same as General for both age limit and attempt count under current UPSC rules.
What if I qualify for two relaxations, e.g. OBC and PwBD? UPSC applies the combined PwBD+OBC-NCL relaxation bracket (10 years, same as PwBD-General/EWS/OBC-NCL) rather than stacking OBC's +3 on top of PwBD's +10 separately — select the PwBD band that matches your combined status.
Is this the official UPSC eligibility checker? No. This is an independent, browser-only estimate built from the published 2026 CSE notification. UPSC itself does not publish an online eligibility calculator — always cross-check your specific case against the notification PDF at upsc.gov.in, and when in doubt, consult the notification's exact wording over any third-party tool, including this one.
Is my data stored anywhere? No. The check runs entirely in your browser; nothing is transmitted to a server.
