KTU CGPA to Percentage Formula

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), Kerala, updated its official CGPA-to-percentage conversion following an Academic Council resolution dated 9 June 2023, which removed a constant that had previously been subtracted for B.Tech programmes:

Percentage = 10 × CGPA [current, effective June 2023 onward] Percentage = 10 × CGPA − 2.5 [older formula, before June 2023]

KTU made this change to align with the simpler ×10 convention used by most other state and national technical institutions, after students reported that the older −2.5 offset was putting them at a disadvantage in rank lists and job applications compared to graduates of other universities using a plain ×10 rule.

Worked Example

Under the current (post-June 2023) formula, a KTU CGPA of 8.5 converts to:

Percentage = 10 × 8.5 = 85%

Under the older pre-2023 formula, the same 8.5 CGPA would have converted to (10 × 8.5) − 2.5 = 82.5% — a 2.5-point difference. If your KTU grade card was issued before June 2023, use the older formula; if it was issued after, use the current simple ×10 rule.

Who Needs This Calculator

This calculator is for KTU-affiliated B.Tech students across Kerala's engineering colleges who need a percentage figure for placements, PSU or government job eligibility, or higher-study applications — particularly useful for recent graduates confirming which of KTU's two formulas (pre- or post-June 2023) applies to their specific grade card.

Official Formula vs. Approximation

The current 10 × CGPA formula is KTU's own updated official rule, adopted by Academic Council resolution on 9 June 2023 specifically to simplify and align KTU's conversion with the ×10 standard used by most other institutions. This is a high-confidence official figure for any KTU grade card issued from mid-2023 onward; graduates with older grade cards should use the previous −2.5 offset formula instead.

KTU's Grading System

KTU grades B.Tech courses on a 10-point scale with credits per subject, computing SGPA per semester and CGPA cumulatively as credit-weighted averages. The percentage-conversion rule is separate from the grading scale itself and has changed once (in June 2023) since KTU's founding — a detail that matters specifically for percentage conversion, not for how your CGPA itself was calculated.

Common Mistakes When Converting KTU CGPA

  • Using the current ×10 formula for a grade card issued before June 2023, which overstates your official percentage by 2.5 points
  • Using the older −2.5 offset formula for a post-June-2023 grade card, which understates your percentage by the same margin
  • Confusing semester SGPA with final cumulative CGPA when converting for an overall percentage
  • Applying a different state's offset-based formula (like GTU's or MAKAUT's) to a KTU CGPA, which KTU's rule doesn't use
  • Submitting a self-calculated percentage on a legal or immigration document instead of KTU's own percentage certificate

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the official KTU CGPA formula? Yes, for grade cards issued from June 2023 onward — KTU's Academic Council formally adopted the 10 × CGPA formula on 9 June 2023. Grade cards issued before that date should use the previous 10 × CGPA − 2.5 formula instead.

How do I know which formula applies to me? Check the issue date on your KTU grade card or consolidated statement. If it was issued on or after 9 June 2023, use the current 10 × CGPA rule; if issued earlier, use the older 10 × CGPA − 2.5 formula.

Why did KTU remove the 2.5-point deduction? KTU's Academic Council cited the disadvantage the older formula put KTU graduates at compared to other state and national institutions using a simple ×10 rule in rank lists and job applications, and aligned KTU's formula to match.
