How to Use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your percentage in the box above, or click the swap icon (⇄) first if you want to go the other way (CGPA → percentage).
  2. Click Convert to see your estimated CGPA instantly.
  3. Read the note above the calculator — it tells you whether the formula used is the university's official rule or a clearly labeled approximation.
  4. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere. The formula runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, and the page works the same with your network disconnected.

Percentage to CGPA — the General Reference Formula

Unlike CGPA-to-percentage, there is no single Indian-wide rule for going the other way, because different universities use different multipliers and offsets in their official CGPA-to-percentage formula, and inverting each one gives a different result. This tool uses the most commonly referenced general rule, which reverses the CBSE-style ×9.5 convention:

Estimated CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

This is a reasonable starting estimate when you don't know which specific formula your institution uses, but it will not exactly match universities that apply an offset before multiplying — for example VTU's (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or GTU's (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 formulas invert to different, offset-adjusted equations, not a simple division by 9.5.

Worked Example

A percentage of 87.4% gives an estimated CGPA of:

87.4 ÷ 9.5 = 9.2

A percentage of 75% gives an estimated CGPA of 75 ÷ 9.5 ≈ 7.89, and a percentage of 60% gives an estimated CGPA of 60 ÷ 9.5 ≈ 6.32. Compare this against, say, VTU's actual reverse formula — a percentage of 77.5% inverts to a VTU CGPA of exactly 8.5 (77.5 ÷ 10 + 0.75), not the 8.16 this generic ÷9.5 rule would produce — which illustrates why a university-specific tool gives a more accurate number.

Who Needs This Calculator

This calculator is for students or applicants who only have a percentage figure (from a mark sheet, an old certificate, or a non-CGPA board) and need a rough CGPA-equivalent for a form that asks for CGPA instead — and whose specific university or board isn't one of our dedicated calculators (VTU, Anna University, CBSE, GTU, and others).

Official Formula vs. Approximation

This is explicitly a general approximation, not any single university's official formula — it exists because "percentage to CGPA" is one of the most commonly searched conversions, but the honest answer is that the correct reverse formula depends entirely on which institution issued your original percentage-based mark sheet. If your university is VTU, Anna University, CBSE, GTU, MAKAUT, RGPV, KTU, or Calicut, use that specific calculator instead — each inverts that university's own official (or clearly labeled approximate) formula rather than this generic ÷9.5 rule.

Why There's No Single Reverse Formula

A CGPA-to-percentage formula generally takes one of two shapes across Indian universities: a plain multiplier (Percentage = CGPA × k, as with Anna University's ×10 or CBSE's ×9.5) or a multiplier with a subtracted offset (Percentage = (CGPA − offset) × k, as with VTU, GTU, MAKAUT, and several others). Inverting a plain multiplier is simple division, but inverting an offset formula requires adding the offset back after dividing — so a single ÷9.5 rule can only ever be an approximation across universities that don't actually use a ×9.5 multiplier in the first place.

Common Mistakes When Converting Percentage to CGPA

  • Assuming ÷9.5 works for every university — VTU, GTU, MAKAUT, AKTU, and Calicut all use an offset that this simple division doesn't account for
  • Using this generic estimate on an official application form when a university-specific calculator is available for your institution
  • Confusing a percentage-based board result (like ICSE) with a CGPA-based one when deciding whether you need this conversion at all
  • Rounding the estimated CGPA up to make it look more favorable rather than reporting the calculated figure as-is
  • Treating the estimate as equivalent to an official CGPA certificate on a legal or immigration document

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the official Percentage to CGPA formula? No — there's no single official formula for this direction across Indian universities. This tool's ÷9.5 rule is a commonly used general reference; use a university-specific calculator (VTU, Anna University, GTU, etc.) for an authoritative figure if your institution is listed.

Why is my estimated CGPA different from what my university calculated? Your university most likely uses a different multiplier or an offset-based formula. Check whether your institution has a dedicated calculator on this site (VTU, Anna University, GTU, MAKAUT, RGPV, KTU, Calicut, AKTU) for a more accurate, formula-specific result.

Can I use this for CBSE Class 10 percentage to CGPA? Yes — since CBSE's own official formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5, this tool's ÷9.5 reverse rule matches CBSE exactly. Use our dedicated CBSE calculator with the swap toggle for a labeled CBSE-specific result.
