How to Use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator
- Enter your semester SGPA values in the box above.
- Click Convert (Calculate CGPA) to see your CGPA instantly.
- Read the note above the calculator — it tells you whether the formula used is the university's official rule or a clearly labeled approximation.
- Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere. The formula runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, and the page works the same with your network disconnected.
SGPA to CGPA Formula
Under the UGC's Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) — the framework most Indian universities base their grading on — your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA, not a simple average:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA of semester × total credits of semester) ÷ Σ (total credits of semester)
When every semester carries the same total credit load (which is common in many engineering and science programs where each semester has a fixed number of courses and credit hours), this reduces to a plain average of your SGPA values — which is why many students never notice the credit-weighting step at all. It only makes a visible difference when semester credit loads differ, for example when one semester includes a lower-credit elective-only term, an internship semester, or a project semester with fewer total credits than a regular semester.
Worked Example
Equal-credit case: three semesters with SGPA 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0, all carrying the same credits, average to:
CGPA = (8.0 + 8.5 + 9.0) ÷ 3 = 8.5
Unequal-credit case: semester 1 has SGPA 8.0 over 20 credits, and semester 2 has SGPA 9.0 over 24 credits:
CGPA = (8.0 × 20 + 9.0 × 24) ÷ (20 + 24) = (160 + 216) ÷ 44 = 376 ÷ 44 = 8.55
Notice this credit-weighted 8.55 is higher than the simple average of 8.5, because the higher-SGPA semester carried more credit weight.
Who Needs This Calculator
This calculator is for any Indian university student — engineering, science, commerce, or arts — partway through a multi-semester program who wants to track their running CGPA before the university issues an official consolidated grade sheet, or who needs to project their likely final CGPA before their last semester's results are out.
Official Formula vs. Approximation
The credit-weighted average method is the standard method prescribed under UGC's CBCS framework and is used by the overwhelming majority of Indian universities to compute the CGPA that appears on your official consolidated grade sheet. It's labeled "official" here because it describes how CGPA is defined, not a university-specific shortcut — but your specific university may round intermediate values differently, so treat this as a close working figure rather than a substitute for your official transcript.
SGPA vs. CGPA
Your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) reflects performance in a single semester only — it's the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in that semester's courses. Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) extends that same credit-weighting logic across every semester you've completed so far, giving a single running figure for your entire academic record. Most Indian university grade cards list SGPA per semester and a running CGPA on the final consolidated statement, but rarely show the intermediate CGPA after every semester — which is exactly the gap this calculator fills.
Common Mistakes When Converting SGPA to CGPA
- Using a simple average of SGPA values when your semesters actually carry different total credits, which skews the result
- Forgetting to include a semester with a lower SGPA, which inflates the calculated CGPA compared to your real transcript
- Mixing up SGPA (single semester) and CGPA (cumulative) when entering values — always enter SGPA per term, not a CGPA already averaged elsewhere
- Assuming every university weights backlog/repeat semesters the same way — some universities use the improved re-attempt grade, others average both attempts
- Treating a mid-program calculated CGPA as final before your university issues the official consolidated grade sheet
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the official SGPA to CGPA formula? Yes — credit-weighted averaging of SGPA is the standard method prescribed under UGC's CBCS framework, which is how the vast majority of Indian universities define CGPA on official transcripts.
Do I need to enter credits for every semester? Only if your semesters carry different total credits. If every semester in your program has the same credit load, leave the credits fields blank and the calculator falls back to a simple average, which gives the identical CGPA.
Where do I find my semester's total credits? Your university's curriculum structure document or your semester grade card usually lists the total credits for that semester — add up the credit value of every course you were enrolled in that term.
Does this handle backlog or repeated courses? This calculator averages whatever SGPA you enter per semester — if your university replaces a backlog grade with the improved re-attempt grade in that semester's SGPA, use the SGPA your official grade card shows for that term.
Is my grade data uploaded anywhere? No. The conversion runs entirely as JavaScript inside your browser tab — no CGPA, percentage, or personal information is ever sent to a server, logged, or stored.
Is this tool free to use? Yes. It's completely free, with no login, no watermark, and no usage limit.
