UAN Format Validator (EPFO Universal Account Number)

Check whether a number matches the 12-digit EPFO Universal Account Number format — instantly, entirely in your browser, nothing transmitted or stored.

Checked 100% in your browser — your number is never transmitted or stored.

How to Use the UAN Format Validator

  1. Type or paste a 12-digit UAN into the box above.
  2. Click Check. The tool verifies it's exactly 12 digits and doesn't start with 0.
  3. The decode table shows the full number, since EPFO hasn't published any internal digit structure to break it into further segments.
  4. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere — the whole check runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab.

What a UAN Is

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit identifier issued by India's Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to every contributing employee. Unlike the older Member ID system (which was tied to a specific employer and changed with every job switch), a UAN stays with you for your entire working life — it acts as an umbrella that links all the individual Member IDs from every employer you've ever had, so you can view your consolidated PF balance, transfer funds between jobs, and file withdrawal claims from a single account. UANs are also linked to Aadhaar, ensuring one person can only ever hold a single UAN.

Why This Is a Format-Only Check

Unlike Aadhaar (Verhoeff checksum), GSTIN (Luhn mod-36), or several of the other tools in this family, EPFO has not published any internal digit structure or self-checking algorithm for the UAN — it's issued as a plain sequential 12-digit number, not generated by a formula you can reverse-engineer or verify offline. That means this tool can only confirm the number is the right length and shape; it cannot catch a single mistyped digit the way a checksum-based validator can, because there is no public checksum to check against.

Worked Example

101234567890
matches the expected shape: exactly 12 digits, starting with 1 (not 0), so it passes the format check this tool performs.

What This Tool Does NOT Do

This is a length/format check only. It does not query the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal or the Unified Portal, and it cannot confirm a UAN is actually allotted, active, or linked to a real employee's PF account. For anything that matters — checking your PF balance, linking Aadhaar and KYC, downloading a UAN card, or filing a withdrawal — always use the official unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in, never a third-party tool.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing your UAN with your PF Member ID (an older, employer-specific identifier with a completely different, longer alphanumeric format)
  • Assuming a 12-digit-shaped number that "looks right" is definitely your real, active UAN — without a checksum, format alone can't prove that
  • Typing a UAN with a leading 0 — EPFO's issued UANs don't start with 0
  • Sharing your UAN alongside your Aadhaar or bank details on an untrusted site "to verify it" — legitimate verification only happens on the official EPFO portal

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my UAN uploaded anywhere? No — everything runs locally in your browser tab.

Why doesn't this tool have a checksum like the Aadhaar or GSTIN tools? Because EPFO hasn't published one — the UAN is a plain sequential number, not a self-checking formula.

Does a valid format mean my UAN is real? No — it means the shape is correct, not that EPFO has actually issued or activated it.

Is this tool free? Yes, completely free, with no login and no usage limit.
