France Income Tax 2025 — How the Quotient Familial Works
France uses a unique family quotient (quotient familial) system that no other major economy uses. Your total taxable income is divided by the number of parts (parts) in your tax household (foyer fiscal). Each adult gets 1 part, the first two children get 0.5 parts each, and each subsequent child gets 1 part. The progressive tax brackets are then applied to the income per part, and the result is multiplied by the total number of parts.
This system means a married couple with two children pays significantly less tax than a single person earning the same income. For 2025, the 10% employment expense deduction (abattement forfaitaire de 10%) is applied automatically to salary income before calculating tax.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include social security contributions (CSG/CRDS)? No. Social contributions of approximately 9.2% to 17.2% are separate from income tax and not included here.
What is the abattement de 10%? It's an automatic 10% deduction on salary income to account for professional expenses. No receipts needed.
How does the family quotient benefit families? A married couple with 2 children has 3 parts (2 adults + 0.5 + 0.5). The income is divided by 3 before applying progressive rates, which can significantly reduce tax.
