Residency Requirements for NHR

To qualify for NHR status you must:

  • Spend ≥183 days per year in Portugal, or establish your habitual residence there
  • Not have been a Portuguese tax resident in the previous 5 years
  • Apply via Portal das Finanças before March 31 of the year following your first year of residency

Duration and What Happens After 10 Years

NHR status applies for 10 consecutive years and cannot be renewed. After the period ends, you pay standard progressive rates. Many expats use the 10-year window to build savings or restructure income sources before the transition.

Who Benefits Most from NHR?

  • Digital nomads and remote workers with foreign employment contracts — 20% flat vs up to 48% standard
  • Foreign pensioners relocating for retirement — 10% flat on pension income
  • Investors and entrepreneurs with foreign dividends or capital gains — potentially 0% if taxed in the source country under a tax treaty
  • High-value professionals in qualifying sectors (technology, finance, engineering, arts)

Foreign Income and Tax Treaties

Foreign dividends, capital gains, pensions, and royalties are exempt in Portugal under NHR if they are taxable in another treaty country under the OECD model convention. Portugal has tax treaties with over 70 countries. Always verify your specific income source qualifies before relying on the exemption.

How to Apply for NHR

  1. Obtain a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF) at a local Finanças office or online
  2. Establish legal residency in Portugal (rental contract, property deed, or other proof)
  3. Register as a tax resident at Portal das Finanças
  4. Submit the NHR application before March 31 of the following year

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NHR regime still available in 2025? The original NHR regime was replaced by the IFICI regime (also called NHR 2.0) for new applicants from 2024 onward. Existing NHR holders continue under the original rules. This calculator reflects the original NHR rates applicable to current holders.

Can I apply for NHR if I'm already a Portuguese citizen? Yes, if you have not been a tax resident in Portugal for the previous 5 years.

What counts as "foreign income" under NHR? Income from employment performed outside Portugal, foreign pensions, dividends from foreign companies, and capital gains on foreign assets — provided they are taxable in the source country under a tax treaty.
